China on Sunday ramped up the usage of its experimental Covid-19 vaccines to three more cities for urgent use. This announcement comes days after China’s decision to join the WHO’s COVAX alliance to ensure equitable distribution of Covid-19 vaccines across the world.
At present, a total of 11 vaccines for coronavirus are in various stages of trials in China. As many as four of these vaccines are in the final stage of clinical trials, three out of which have been approved for emergency use among essential workers.
With China’s latest decision, its experimental Covid-19 vaccines will be made available to vulnerable groups in the cities of Yiwu, Ningbo, and Shaoxing of Zhejiang province. Prior to this, permission was granted for emergency use of the vaccines in the city of Jiaxing, according to Chinese government mouthpiece Global Times.
Health authorities in Jiaxing had said on Thursday that the experimental Covid-19 vaccine has been made available among high-risk groups. Ordinary citizens will also be subsequently provided with the vaccine for urgent use, Jiaxing administration had added.
Similarly, doses of China’s experimental Covid-19 vaccines arrived in the city of Yiwu where it was administered to as many as 20 people on the first day. According to Chinese state-run media outlet Global Times, the experimental Covid-19 vaccine is being made available for urgent use to frontline staff for the time being.
The novel coronavirus has claimed 4,634 lives in China while infecting 85,672 people to date as per the official figures released by the Chinese government.
