GET IT FOR: Starts at Rs 24,999
HIGHLIGHT: Good design, smooth software experience
The new Nord helps OnePlus enter the affordable smartphone race in India. For the first time, OnePlus is not offering flagship-grade hardware. But it has largely managed to make the right compromises.
The Nord has a premium feel and touch and the unique Teal colour is a head-turner. It is an all-glass device with Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front and back. But the frame is made of plastic. It is highly recommended to get a hard case to protect the phone.
The display is very similar to the OnePlus 8 and there are no compromises on this front. The OnePlus Nord features a 6.44-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate. It is a delight to watch movies or stream content on the device. There is a 48MP Sony IMX586 main sensor along with three secondary sensors of 8MP, 2MP and 5MP. The overall camera quality is pleasing but it is definitely not the best. This is because while the output of the primary camera is good, the same cannot be said for the secondary sensors. Nord comes with dual front cameras with 32MP and 8MP sensors and offers good quality selfies for social media usage. There is no 3.5mm headphone jack. Also, external mics are not supported during video recordings.
This phone gives a refreshing break from heavily customised UIs with bloatware. The UI is clean and OnePlus promises 2 years of Android upgrades and 3 years of security updates. It is powered by the Snapdragon 765G 5G processor and comes in three RAM and storage options – 6GB/64GB, 8GB/128GB and 12GB/256GB.
Nord does well when it comes to gaming and multitasking. However, it is not the quickest. You may notice small lags while opening heavy games or the camera app. The 4115 mAh battery with WarpCharge 30T fast-charge feature offers a day’s worth of power. If you are an average user, it may be a good idea to go for the low-end variant with 6GB of RAM to get the best bang for the buck.
The Nord is a fine overall package but do not expect it to be a replacement for a true flagship device that runs the latest Snapdragon 800 series processor. Having said that, battery life and the promise of timely software upgrade make the Nord a compelling choice under Rs 30,000.
