Trump says US will not have anymore shutdowns, advocates opening of schools

Even as coronavirus cases continue to mount in the United States, President Donald Trump on Thursday said that the crisis was coming to a close in the US.

“We’re rounding the final turn,” Trump said while lauding the US, adding, “US has done really well, we are proud of everyone who is working towards that. Vaccines are right there but even without it, we are rounding the corner. If you look at the way people are recovering, compared to the past.”

He also compared the US with European Nations, saying, “European Nations have experienced 50% more deaths than the Unites States. You don’t hear these statistics but the United States has done very well”.

New weekly Coronavirus cases have declined by 44 percent since July, added Trump.

The US death toll due to coronavirus currently stands at 191,567 and total cases are 6,388,302.

The president warned that, if elected in November, Joe Biden would “shut down the entire country,” Trump then said, “The unscientific, blanket lockdown proposed by Democrats is the wrong next step. Let me be clear, we are not going to have anymore shutdowns. No. Maybe small sections where there are breakouts can be controlled but not a blanket shutdown like earlier”.

Advocating the opening of schools, he said, “We want schools to safely open and stay open. Children are at extremely low risk of complications from Covid-19. Approximately 0.2% of coronavirus deaths have occurred in those under the age of 25. Based on recent data from more than 20 colleges, not a single student who tested positive for Coronavirus has been hospitalized.”

He quoted data from various surveys saying that online learning cannot replace learning in the classroom.

He also spoke about Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Afghanistan. “Pompeo will be departing this evening on a historic trip to Doha, Qatar, for the beginning of intra-Afghan peace negotiations. These negotiations are the result of a bold diplomatic effort by the Trump Administration in recent months and years.,” he said.

He announced about peace signing between UAE and Israel at the White House next week. “Next week, we will host a historic signing between the United Arab Emirates and Israel here at the White House!”
